“Is this all there is?”

“Is this all there is?”

by Lighten Up Meditation · May 29, 2018

The simple answer to that question is, “How could it be?”

Given the vast complexity of life on this planet alone, it’s clear that Nature has a lot of tricks up her sleeve! Scientists and explorers keep finding new things, whether they’re looking in the cracks and crevices on the surface of the earth or under its oceans, or into the mysteries of the cell structures of the human body.

And then there’s outward explorations, into the stars and beyond the sky into infinity.

It can be humbling to remember that you and I are mere specks of the tiniest sand bouncing around together on a beach that goes on forever.

It seems fairly naive to believe that humans occupying this one planet within our small solar system are It, that this is all there is in the entirety of the Universe.

Similarly, it seems very limited and small to assume that the way you experience Life and the perception your one individuated consciousness has of Existence is the sum total of what all beings everywhere would ever experience.

Because, um, who are you?

How do you know that what you know is all?

When you look back on yourself as a teenager when you were pretty darned cocksure of yourself (and that’s likely true whether you were male or female!), and compare to now, when you have a totally different perspective on the world and how it operates, isn’t that an indication that perhaps you exist on a continuum, and that you don’t currently know everything there is to know?

When you meet someone, or read a book that opens your mind, and you appreciate things in a whole new light, isn’t that evidence that others may be seeing the world differently?

When you look at a baby, or play with a dog, you can appreciate that they are living in a very different reality than you. Neither is “better” than yours; they are both just different.

When you think back to the mental rut you were in just a year ago, or perhaps even as recently as a month! Where you were stuck in a certain way of perceiving, where you were perhaps consumed by a specific knot of a problem that you didn’t think you’d ever untangle? And now you’re free of that, and you have grown stronger, and lighter, and more clear on certain things?

Evolution is happening all of the time, and it’s highly (highly!!) unlikely that you or I are at the pinnacle of it.

The Universe is expanding. Scientists know this. If the Universe is consciousness, then that’s saying that CONSCIOUSNESS is expanding.

Even if we limit ourselves to examining the type of consciousness that we are most familiar with, that which resides in a physical body that we call a human and lives on this physical 3-dimensional earth, if we appreciate that it’s always evolving, then that means that there are some more evolved than me. Or to be more realistic, there’s probably a whole helluva lot who are!

When I remember that my experience of life today is quite differently, even radically so, compared to what it was in the realm of consciousness I lived in in the past, then isn’t it safe to say that there are radically different realms of consciousness available right now? To humans? Where there’s more and different means of perceiving the world available to anyone alive here today?

That’s not even considering what consciousness might be on some other planet in some other galaxy in some other part of the Universe that humankind has not yet been able to track!

I think it’s incredibly good news to assume that there’s more to Life than what you’re currently experiencing right now.

And guess what?

Meditation can introduce you to greater and greater realities!!!

If you’re truly interested in space exploration — of the inner kind!! — then meditation is the key.

Find out what more there is! Meditate!!!!

How to make friends with a bird

How to make friends with a bird

by Lighten Up Meditation · Apr 21, 2018

A long time ago, my teacher gave a talk on how to make friends with a bird. It was a very beautiful talk. The essence of it was, you need to be quiet, and still, and be very very patient. If you sit and wait for the bird to approach you, then eventually you may find you have a new friend.

It’s an obvious metaphor for surrender, and for empathy, and for doing things on Nature’s timeline. Letting go of the fixation on a goal. Stopping the attempt of controlling the outcome.

It’s possible the bird will never want to be friends.

But you’ll still benefit from trying.

All that time being quiet, and watching, and waiting for this bird will let you observe it. You’ll come to know it, even if it does not ever come close. You’ll take on a few of the qualities of bird-ness that are so beautiful. You’ll absorb them.

Being friends with a bird is not about forcing the bird to be friends with you. It’s about being what a bird would want in a friend: Making yourself available. Non-threatening. Passive. Neutral. Inviting.

In many ways, the opposite of the common state of humanity today.

You need to be on the bird’s terms. The bird gets to call the shots and determine what relationship it wants to have with you.

The parallels to your approach to Eternity are innumerable.

If you want to know Stillness, then stop and wait for Stillness to be noticeable. (Hint: It’s *always* here; it’s your busyness that prevents you from experiencing it.)

If you want to know Beauty, then be Beauty.

Such things cannot be forced. They cannot be dictated by the human mind.

In meditation, showing up every day and being committed to your practice, spending time on the mat and being still, noticing, noticing…. These are the things that create an environment where meditation can arise. It’s not going to happen on your terms. It will happen when Nature is good and ready.
