If you’re thinking of watching the Venus transit…

If you’re thinking of watching the Venus transit…

by Lighten Up Meditation · Jun 4, 2012

A once-in-a-lifetime event is happening on Tuesday: Venus will be transiting the Sun.

Actually it’s the second one in a series — this happened back in 2004, which was the day that Reagan passed away, interestingly enough. Not claiming that there’s a connection there but it may help you orient to when it last happened. So it’s not technically a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but the event this week is definitely the last time it’ll happen in our lifetime – unless medical technology changes more dramatically than we expect, at least! Because the next time it will happen is over 100 years from now.

Anyway…

This isn’t technically an “eclipse” because Venus is tiny in comparison to the Sun; it won’t block it out, as the much closer Moon sometimes does when it passes in front. Instead, it will just be a tiny black dot traversing across the glow of our magnificent star.

Of course, we all know that you can’t look directly at the Sun — right? ‘Cuz you can go blind from it. It can burn out your retinas. We actually heard of someone who did an open-eye meditation on the sunrise once… not good.

So if you’re interested enough to try to watch this event, then there’s a way to do it safely. You need more than a piece of cardboard, which is enough to watch a lunar eclipse. For this one, you need binoculars or a telescope. Check out this incredibly thorough video that walks you through the steps.  Or you can just watch the video for some footage of this amazing event, which we assume was captured last time.

And no matter what, you may want to check out your horoscope

for the month — we’ve got a lunar eclipse going on today (June 4th) in Sagitarius plus this Venus transit the next day, and Venus is actually in retrograde cycle right now, so there’s a lot of rather unusual events happening at once. If you don’t have time to read your full horoscope, the most important advice to offer is don’t make any big decisions right now and also stay flexible and loose because you may hear of some big changes come your way all of a sudden.

Lastly: We’ve got a bunch of meditation classes going on, since we’re in the ramp-up to the summer solstice. If you’re in the Silicon Valley area, maybe you’ll join us at one! Here’s the schedule. It woudl be great to see you at one soon!
