Someone initially exploring an interest in meditation may hear about phenomenon that can arise with a spiritual practice. You’ve probably heard that Christ turned water into wine, and healed the sick, and raised the dead. You’re probably not expecting to accrue talents of that magnitude but you may have also heard about people with gifts of clairvoyance or telepathy that came about through meditation. And those can sound super cool!
The trap of course is being interested in such things from an ego-based perspective. It can be very tempting to pursue powers if you’re in a damaged state and are looking to seek control over others. That’s a big “no!” if you are truly focusing on evolution.
The value of gifts and skills comes from how they make it easier to pursue your practice.
For example, if you are actively working towards a goal in your life (which hopefully you are!!) and pouring your time and energy into a project that makes you happy and brings light into this world, then your meditation practice will be wholly complimentary to that. Or should I say “holy complimentary”?? 🙂 All of your efforts in all facets of your life will begin to work together. You’ll be more in tune with non-physical information that comes to you through the ether, for lack of a better term for it. You’ll wake up knowing what you need to work on that day, or you’ll have a sudden recollection about something you forgot to do or a flash of insight on a mistake you hadn’t even realized you made. You’ll be able to go to work today armed with efficiencies.
Say you’re putting together a proposal for an important client. You put the finishing touches on the document and you are ready to send it out. But then something comes up that requires your immediate attention, and you switch gears to focus on that task instead. And by the time you are done, you have to leave for a meeting, so you don’t manage to send the proposal out at all.
And then the next morning, you wake up with a thought in your head: “Did I do the math wrong on page 5?”
You get to work and open the file, and sure enough, there was a mistake in the calculations. You breathe a massive sigh of relief that you were able to catch it and fix it. (You even take the time to go back through all the formulas again, to make sure they’re all perfect with no other sneaky errors like that.)
You can easily write this experience off as just being lucky. But the thing is, the more that you meditate, and dedicate yourself to your spiritual practice, which is really another way of saying you’re committed to your own evolution, then you’ll discover that your luck increases in confounding and beautiful ways. You’ll have moments like this on an increasing frequency, and each time you’ll be amazed when it happens.
Another word for the type of luck I’ve just described is being psychic.
That term has some woo-woo baggage, and many people are dismissive of it, thinking of the caricature of a circus performer who’s claiming she’s reading your destiny when she’s really only interested in fleecing your wallet. In our science-based culture, if it cannot be proven through 3-dimensional evidence in the physical world, it’s often discarded as nonsense.
But when you start having your own personal experiences like this — over and over and over again — then you’ll come to see how this term applies.
Being psychic — or really, being sensitive and nurturing your awareness — makes you more efficient.
Being focused on the development of powers or abilities to control others is adharmic — meaning, it’s against the dharma, and is damaging.
Accepting the gifts that come with a dedication to the universal, and leveraging them to make your own life more exquisitely beautiful, is what I call intelligent.
It’s not necessary to seek these gifts. They will come. As long as you use them solely to advance your own commitment to Light and Enlightenment, then you will have a lovely unfolding of personal miracles that you will continually enjoy.
